A Career in Community Organizing Becomes an Enviable Option

- NYTimes.com. A job that has not been all that alluring to college graduates is in resurgence, according to leading community organizers and educators. Once thought of as a destination for lefty radicals committed to living lives of low pay, frustration and bitter burnout, community organizing is now seen by many young people an exciting career.

Take Action: Stand up to media attacks on pre-k

gma_stossel_emailOn Friday, Good Morning America ran an inaccurate and unbalanced story, painting public pre-kindergarten as a “scam” and a “waste of money.”

The three-minute segment did not have a single word about the four decades of research proving that quality pre-k benefits all children or that it returns $2 or more for every dollar we invest.

Add your name to the petition to GMA producers and help make sure our children don’t pay the price for news stories that omit the facts about pre-k!

The full petition reads:

“Good Morning America presented viewers with an innaccurate and unbalanced picture of the critical issue of quality pre-kindergarten. Any serious debate over pre-k should include the four decades of research showing how children, parents, taxpayers, and the economy benefit from high-quality early learning programs.”

Courses and programs on gender and sexuality being targeted

Lawmakers in Georgia and Florida are beginning to use ‘budget cuts’ as an excuse for targeting programs and courses on sexuality, queer and women’s studies. Georgia State University is being forced to testify TODAY in front of the state senate about ‘questionable’ faculty research and course offerings on sexuality. At Florida Atlantic University, the administration is trying to suspend the Women’s Studies program.

Please help by signing the petition below, and forwarding this to anyone else who may be interested in signing on. We have the support of several hundred academics so far, we need more.

McCarthyism is alive and well in these states. Your state could be next.

Compared to other countries, U.S. flunks in teacher pay

Recent research has highlighted the important role of teachers in fostering student achievement. However, the United States lags significantly behind other countries in teacher compensation, which adversely impacts efforts to recruit high-quality teachers. In South Korea and Germany, starting salaries for teachers are about 141% of per capita GDP, while the figure for the United States is only 81%. In fact, all countries in this sample pay their teachers a significantly higher relative wage as a starting salary compared to the United States. Compared to other countries, U.S. flunks in teacher pay
